‘Flamenco is the means through which man reaches God without the intervention
of saints or angels - Luis Antonio de Vega
When the above line on the backcover of a book titled !Flamenco! found
in a bookstore in Madrid, I was reminded intuitively of the fascinating dancing
figures. for it was the dance that I was captivated by very much. At that time
in regard to flamenco the cante was thought to be a secondary element of it
attached to the dance: dancers' black eyes which make spactators breathless,
elegant arabic forms which the long arms of the dancer draws over her head,
dazzling whirlwinds of the skirt with polka dots waving to guitar rhythms,
marvelous footsteps and so on.
Then when it came to the line, the cante came to take the place of the dance
in my mind. It means that flamenco was reminded of the voice sound
than the body movement. I understood that cantee, the harsh sound of lament was more essential of flamenco. Once I walked on the alley to the hill of Sacromonte
in Granada , a harsh voice sound of lamenct far from somewhere below caught my ears calling back my late old mother to the mind.
The voice sound of flamenco purifies the cante singer and the lovers of it in their mind. Now I understand that not only the singer gets his(or her) mind purified
by singing it, but also the lovers of it gets peace in their mind during listening to
the voice sound of it.
