Jypsy work philosophy
음악과는 별개로, 전통적인 집시인들은 천성적으로 배우들이다.
그들의 삶은 그들이 거리에서나 자주 드나들며
칭찬하고 남으로부터 칭찬받는 카페에서 잘 들어난다.
그들은 깔끔한 옷차림에다 독특한 개성의 소유자임을 드러내기를
좋아한다. 이런 태도로 스페인 산의 값싼 화주 잔을 들고
수탉처럼 우쭐대며, 한편으로는 관대하며,권위적이기하고,
다른 한편으로는 겸손하며 친절하기도 하면서
공식적인 태도에다 무엇보다도 개인적인 특성으로,
말하자면 튀는 옷맵시를 좋아하는 품성의 소유자들이다.
집시들에겐 미래에 대한 큰 포부가 없으며, 그들은 삶의 기본적인 요소만으로
만족할 줄 안다. 그들의 의식속에는 진보라거나 발전의 기념이 없다.
그들은 치열한 경쟁이나 경쟁자들을 경멸하며, 교통이 번잡한 거리나
현대식 건물의 번쩍이는 카페, 목적지없는 부산한 문명 응
현대적 현상을 싫어한다. 한마디로 그들은
진보에 무관심한 철학을 지니고 있다. 물질주의, 할부 제도 생명보험 등....
목표도 없이 부산한 현대적 삶에는 무관심하다
집시들에겐 자신을 힘든 일에 하루종일 옭아매는 일자리
상상할 수 없다 돈보다 중요한 것은 자유로윰이다.
그는 필요에 따라 기분에 따라
일할 것인지 아닌지를 스스로 선택하는 자유를 소중히여긴다.
'내가 내 삶의 주인이다.'
집시 문화에서 가장 특징적인 요소는 가족을, 더 나아가, 공동체를
소중히 여긴다는 점이다. 연장자가 존중받고 대접받는다. 무엇보다
그들은 노인들에게 찾아가 노인들과 의논하고 의견을 구한다.
집시족들은 비극적 운명을 숙명으로 받아들이는 경향이 있다.
그들이 소속된 사회의 규범을 받아들이기를 거부하는 태도로
그들은 사회적으로 박해의 대상인 되었던 것이다.
인간의 마음은 유랑생활 자체를 비극적 운명과 연계시키는 이유는
무엇인가? 지금 그들은 정착의 삶을 누리고는 있지만
그들은 우리들보다 유랑에 더해 더 많이 알고있음에 틀림없다.?Their preferred life is in the streets and cafe, where they can
see and be seen , admire and feel admired. They enjoy being
nattily dressed and they have an indestructible attitude of being
somebody unique , Armed with these assets, and a glass of
two of aguardiente, they strut like cocks, being at once
expansive , authoritative, friendly, condescending , formal,
dignified, and ,above all, individualistic.
not ambitious ,and are capable of being happily
with only the basic necessitities . The concepts and
developments of progress are incomprehensible to them.
They scorn the rat race and its participants , together with
such obnoxious modern phenomena as demanding traffic
lights, motor-clutterd streets, shining stainless-steel
cafeteriaa ,and grim, unseeing civilization bustling
to no destination. Inevitably traditional flamenco philosophy
will give ground to progress.
Materialism , life insurance
grave sites on installments and pressing demands will take
their toll, and self-confident flamenco faces will cloud
with doubt and insecurity. This is progress as it
affects flamenco.

Gypsy non-work ethic
is unthinkable that a gypsy should to take a job that condemned
him to daylong labor in the dark.....More important than money
is the freedom that gives you the choice to work or not, according
to mood or need. yo mando en mi hambre, said El Chocolate:
" I am the master of my own hinger".
This emerges less clearly in a town of long settlement and intergration
such as Jerez, where I count a lawyer, a television producer, and
a business manager among the gypsies I have met. But then it is
also a town where only two of the beggars are gypsy.-and they
are both simple. With this non-work ethic goes a tendency not to
plan for the future.(Take no heed for the morrow- they have a
respectable precedent.) one friend told me that she had been determined
not to marry a fellow gypsy because she wanted a man who would
give their children a better life.
Perhaps the most marked of the gypsy cultural traits concerns
the importance of the flamily and, by extension, of the community.
The damage done to Triana, in Seville, and the Sacromonte,in
Granada, lay in the dispersal of its community, one in which
the elders are always cared for and respected, but above all,
consulted and listened to. In their own language:

I dont want to leave the subject without mention of the Gypsies'
strong sense of tragic destiny. Their refusal to conform to the
norms of the countries they passed through is enough to explain
their persecution. But why should the human mind associate
tragic destiny with nomadism in itself? wondering jew, Cain?
Why the concept of being condemned to wander? This is not
the place to expand on the matter. Here it is enough to say
that Gypsy, though long settled now, is more aware of
tragic destiny than the rest of us.
This brief sketch has no pretension to be more than an introduction
but one that I felt necessary because of the Gypsies' key role
in flamenco. It is not exclusive to them. But they are its principal
torchbearers, and always have been. Their own opinions
range from gogged belief that flamenco is theirs alone to the
more widespread opinion reatly summed up by the dancer
Manuela Carrasco. When asked what was the difference between
Gypsy and non-Gypsy flemanco, she said:
None at all" and added ,with a smile,"but the again we Gypsues do
have a quality all our ow
